Prototyping Away! This entry was posted on 2/3/2007 3:01 AM and is filed under uncategorized. A lot has happened in the last several months. There's been
different parts exchanged, removed, added, more materials have been
experimented with that we never knew existed, and lots more money has
been spent on more designing and prototyping, each contributing
different and better ideas with going about producing a great mace.
The process is taking much longer than we anticipated, but we're sure the end result will be much greater. If we ended up going into production with our first mace, you'd still be very pleased, but some fine tweaking would need to be done. Here's some highlights of the upcoming mace: -Steel Parts instead of brass. Unlike other companies who are still using brass, steel is lighter and is a much more durable metal. Like brass, it can be plated in any finish. It is also slightly more costly which is a reason companies haven't headed in that direction. -Plating. We've seen dozens of different colors our maces can be plated with other than just chrome. Other finishes include copper, rose gold, flat black, brushed and antiqued chrome, silver. Just about everything and nothing you would normally think could be plated on to a mace! -Removable ferrule as well as base for the head. This will allow Drum Majors to switch out a ferrule, switch out the shaft if they grow any, or if newer products are added! Don't worry about having to buy an entirely new mace anymore or sending in your entire mace for a repair either. -Built in plug in ferrule, instead of rubber tips, that is streamlined with the shape so that it does not interrupt the form and look of the mace. -Shaft. We've tried and tested several different synthetic materials that mimic the flexibility of a malacca (a species of rattan) cane mace but has the consistency and durability of a man-made material. No more having to worry about that bent malacca cane and you'll no longer be guessing if the diameter will even be spinnable! If you're currently using a fiberglass shaft, you won't have to worry about your equipment feeling "life-less" or breaking frequently by the ferrule. The material we've chosen is a light-weight material that is comparable to carbon fiber in its durability and is as flexible as malacca cane or other strong rattans. It is also heat and wear resistant, resists chemicals and corrosion. Can you say that about your current shaft? This material comes at a pretty penny but will be well worth it. -Chain or Cord? It's really up to you since you'll be able to replace either one interchangeably without hurting a finger. -Spun Metal Heads. We will be debuting with two different heads. Both are a take on current, very popular mace heads. They are both still very modest looking but have their own sense of styling. Nothing extremely fancy just yet, but we've got some tricks under our sleeves for some elaborate things in the future. -As far as structural integrity goes, we're currently re-designing a brace on the interior of the mace head. What is currently up for modification is a brace that will possibly be made of high-impact ABS plastic. What did you expect from a prototyping company that engineers things for the automotive industry? -ALL parts will be produced locally to us in California. This will affect the pricing, but will also greatly affect the quality and end product in only positive ways. As you may very well know, this is all subject to change. You should have seen the other things we went through before we came to these specifications, a book could be written! Our definite ideas such as the removable pieces and structural designs have also been submitted, giving us the ability to claim "Patent Pending." You also might have noticed that some high costs were mentioned. I mention this because we're NOT looking to produce a mace that will give us a quick buck; after all, the people involved with this project and I will be spinning them as well! While I cannot promise a price at this moment, I can tell you that this mace will be priced for the serious or advancing Drum Major but still be affordable for the current market. Within the next week, another set of CAD (Computer Aided Drafting) drawings for redesigned parts will be made and we'll off to making another prototype. Hopefully this will bring us into production within the next month or so. Jason Paguio Managing Partner |
